All good commercial templates use overrides heavily. The big ones now use frameworks that cut down the development time. Freelance designers like myself might have a set of overrides that can be used for most projects. I am always trying to create new layouts for things like forms or even content and that means playing around with com_content or com_contact.

For the new kids on the block, learn the ins and outs of overriding and you will be able to manipulate the content output as needed. Flexibility is the name of the game.
