Grindstone's April Fools

| More

While I was working in the corporate world we tracked our time daily so once I got back to freelancing I continued the practice by using Grindstone 2, a great Open Source time tracking application.

Grindstone is upgraded regularly so I didn't think anything of today's upgrade notice and proceeded to install it. Once the installation was done a pop up window came on saying "Unfortunately we can no longer offer Grindstone free of charge. If you would like to continue using it you will need to activate it." the popup had 4 subscription modes which started at $79.99/year. I was a little peeved and thought "another Open Source project bites the dust" and clicked on the cancel button. At that point another alert popped up saying "You chose not to register Grindstone. You will not be able to use it and all your data is being deleted."

I was shocked. REALLY not impressed. My mind was going through all the data I had saved from the last 3 months and trying to remember how many open projects I had open on it and trying to put them down on paper to transfer to another program.

That is when another window popped up with "Just kidding!! April Fools'!".  At that point I started to laugh.

The public release post has the screenshot and the many comments by the people who got totally fooled by this prank. Most of them took it in the spirit of the prank but there are always some sour grapes in the bunch.

I can laugh about it now even though at the moment I thought my data was being erased I possibly looked a little green in the face. Cheers!
